What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?
While no dental health problem should go untreated, some dental issues require fast action for your health and safety. Contact our office as soon as possible if you experience any of the following:
• A fractured or broken tooth
• A loose tooth
• A tooth knocked out
• Severe pain in the teeth or jaw
• Swelling in your cheek or face
• An abscess in the gums, especially one that has ruptured
• A filling, crown, or bridge has come loose or broken
Steps to Take Before Your Emergency Appointment
Our office will do our best to have you come in as quickly as possible. While you are preparing for your appointment, certain steps may help you to increase the success of your treatment.
If a tooth has been knocked out, rinse it thoroughly with water or milk - not with soap - and place it back into the empty socket. If it cannot be placed in the socket, store the tooth in a cup of milk or water until your visit. Use sterile gloves when handling the tooth if possible.
If you have a severe toothache, rinse your mouth with a combination of salt and warm water. This acts as a sterilizing agent in case of infection. Apply a cold compress to your cheek in the general area of the ache – do not apply cold directly to the tooth.
